Strict Parenting Causes Obese Kids

You think telling your tot what to do will make them the perfect kid? According to a new study, you might be doing them more harm than good.

It’s obvious that unhealthy parents are likely to have unhealthy kids. Duh! But, a new study from McGill University in Montreal  shows that parenting style effects kid’s health too. They found that depending on how strict the parents were impacted their kid’s weight.

Researchers gathered data from 1994-2008 by the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, a Canadian survey that measures the BMIs of children ages 11 and under.

There were 4 parenting styles:

1.    Authoritative but responsive

2.    Authoritarian and unresponsive

3.    Permissive but responsive

4.    Negligent

Children with authoritarian parents were at the greatest risk for obesity. In fact, these tykes were 30 percent more likely to be obese at 2 to 5 years old and 37 percent more likely to be obese at 6 to 11 years old than those with authoritative parents.

Authoritative parents set boundaries for their children but also give them positive praise and teach them the importance of self-control, which is instrumental in preventing obesity. If you go the dictator route (authoritarian), then you’ll have kids that combat and overeat.

So, love your kids and chill out a bit. They are only little once, and if you don’t lay off they will be ‘big’ sooner than you liked.
