He threw the last pitch to win the 2021 World Series for the Atlanta Braves over the Houston Astros last year, but last week the two teams paired up for a reported pre-deadline trade on Monday that brought right-handed starter Jake Odorizzi to the Atlanta Braves and sent left-handed reliever Will Smith to the Astros.
This season has been a bumpy ride with Smith on the mound (which he admits in his farewell below) but let's not forget about the great memories and the good he brought our communities.
It's bitter sweet because Smith is one of our homegrown stars. He pitched at Northgate High School in Newnan, Ga as a kid. His family still lives there. In March 2021 when an F4 tornado ripped through his hometown and damaged his alma mater, Smith was quick to jump in and organize relief efforts for all of Coweta Country.
Most importantly we can't forget about that magical month of October that he gave Braves fans last year where he didn't give up one single run the enitre post-season. Without Will Smith the Braves wouldn't have broken that 25 year World Series Curse!
He wrote a formal goodbye to Braves Country. He'll be back during the off season. You still may see him at Wal-Mart in Newnan! I'll never hear Ted Nugent Stranglehold again without thinking of WILL SMITH!
