91,000 Pounds of Ground Turkey Being Recalled Amid Salmonella Outbreak

Time to check those freezers, Jennie-O Turkey has recalled packages of ground turkey amid a widespread Salmonella outbreak that's been tied to at least one death and 164 reported illnesses in 35 states.

The products being recalled include 1-pound packages of raw, ground Jennie-O turkey that were shipped nationwide. Most of the 91,000 pounds of turkey had use-by dates of early October and should no longer be in stores, however, regulators worry that consumers still have some packages in their freezer. People are being urged to throw the ground turkey away and not consume it.

The following products have been specifically recalled:

  • 1-lb. packages of "Jennie-O GROUND TURKEY 93% LEAN | 7% FAT" with "Use by" dates of 10/01/2018 and 10/02/2018.
  • 1-lb. packages of "Jennie-O TACO SEASONED GROUND TURKEY" with a "Use by" date of 10/02/2018.
  • 1-lb. packages of "Jennie-O GROUND TURKEY 85% LEAN | 15% FAT" with a "Use by" date of 10/02/2018.
  • 1-lb. packages of "Jennie-O ITALIAN SEASONED GROUND TURKEY" with a "Use by" date of 10/02/2018.

Government agencies have discovered the Salmonella strain responsible for the outbreak in 29 manufacturing plants from 19 different companies, according to a statement from Jennie-O's parent company, Hormel Foods Corp.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has not named the plants or companies being referred to. The agency said it has so far been unable to tie a specific product to the outbreak. Salmonella is not considered an adulterant in raw poultry unless products can be linked to outbreaks or illnesses.

With Thanksgiving only a few days away, the agency is also reminding consumers to always properly handle and cook their turkeys thoroughly to kill any potential salmonella. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Salmonella poisoning causes about 1.2 million illnesses, 23,000 hospitalizations and 450 deaths every year in the United States.
