Mitchell Tenpenny shared a sincere word of advice to his younger self.
The Nashville, Tennessee-born artist, 36, joined songwriter and podcast host Troy Cartwright on an episode of Ten Year Town that premiered on Tuesday (April 7). Cartwright concluded the conversation by prompting Tenpenny to share what he’d tell his younger self, and the “Truth About You” star responded:
“Just be a good person. Just start there. There’s so much talent here [in Nashville, Tennessee]. Everyone can play. Everyone can sing. The second you get arrogant or think you’re so cool because you’re a guitar player, a singer, that’s just — there’s no room for that. Be somebody people want to hang out with, inspire people, get a little too tipsy and be a freaking, you know, spiritual leader to somebody at Tin Roof, man. Pump people up. Make people want to be around you. And then, that’ll only help you, your soul and your network. I mean, and then it’s real, too. I think all that talent will come after that. Be somebody that people want to be around. Be kind and genuine. I mean, (being) genuine is the key to success, I think. For sure. It really has nothing to do with music to me. If it’s advice, it’s about who you are as a person, man. Be good. Be kind.”
Throughout the podcast episode, Tenpenny and Cartwright spoke about Tenpenny’s breakthrough hit single, “Drunk Me,” his songwriting, navigating his journey in country music, his tours of the years (he's hit the road with Jason Aldean, Luke Combs, and Jordan Davis and others over the years), and more. The new Ten Year Town episode arrives shortly after Tenpenny and his wife, fellow country artist Meghan Patrick, announced Baby No. 1 is on the way.
