A kids basketball team in New Jersey decided if they couldnāt play with their two female teammates, theyād rather quit for the rest of the season. The Catholic Youth Organization league recently told officials at St. Johnās in Clark, New Jersey, that their fifth-grade team shouldnāt have ever been coed and that their girls werenāt allowed to finish the season.
But the team has been coed for the last four years because there werenāt enough girls to have their own team. So when the boys on the team heard the news, they chose to not take to the court without their girl players.
"One parent told me it's my decision (whether the girls play),ā says St. Johnās coach Rob Martel, ābut I said no way, I'm not making this decision for 11 10-year-olds.ā And when he asked the team to make the call, they chanted āUnity!ā and decided to end the season together.
