Popeyes Employee Surprised With Nursing School Tuition Money
He only talked to her for 30 seconds in the drive-thru window, but it was enough to make a Kansas City cop want to help Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen employee Shajuana Mays follow her dream. Donald Carter chatted with Mays as he got his order and she mentioned wanting to go to nursing school - so he helped raise money to make it a possibility for her.
Carter says Mays had “a spark” that made him want to help her. So he started a GoFundMe page with a goal of raising $1,500 for Mays for nursing school, but in less than three days, it had donations of $13,000.
“This is not about us, it’s about you,” Carter says in a video of him telling her the good news. “It’s about the community supporting somebody who wants to do better.”
And she was shocked by this total stranger’s incredible gesture. “I don’t even know how to describe it in words,” Mays says. “I’m excited — I actually get to pursue something that I’ve always wanted to be doing for a very long time."
