Some nurses at a hospital in Denmark broke the rules to make a dying 75-year-old man’s wish come true. Doctors told Carsten Flemming Hansen that he was too sick for surgery and would die within days from internal bleeding from an aortic aneurysm. So he told them there was one thing he still wanted to do: smoke a cigarette and drink a cold glass of wine outside, while watching the sunset.
A post on the hospital’s Facebook page shows that nurses wheeled Hansen onto a balcony and let him light up, despite the hospital’s no smoking policy. He sipped his wine and enjoyed the sunset, with his friends and family beside him.
“It was a very cozy and relaxed atmosphere,” one of the nurses says. Hansen passed away days later, but it’s comforting to know those caring for him in his final days showed humanity and granted his last request in life.
