My Mom, Mary aka Mama Freck, was an operating room nurse for over 20 years. Now that she has retired she has started volunteering at various hospitals, including CHOA. With her experience in the OR and volunteering she has seen how stressful and scary it can be for a child to go into surgery. Whenever anyone goes into surgery they must wear a cap on their head to cover their hair. Normally you get a thin disposable hat provided by the hospital. My Mom had the idea to make caps for kids like some doctors wear made out of themed cloth. For the past couple of years my Mom has been making surgery hats for the kids at CHOA. The kids get to pick and keep the hat they want to wear for surgery. Deciding which themed hat they want (Finding Nemo, Cinderella, Baseball...) takes their minds off of their surgery. It also helps comfort the child during the scary time. Recently ABC News shared a video of kids from CHOA with their comfort items in the hospital. One of the kids featured is wearing one of my Mom's hats!!!
