Minnesota resident Earl Melchert had seen the news about Jasmine Block, a 15-year-old girl who had gone missing from her home the month before, but he had no idea he’d have the chance to be a hero in her return. He was on his way to work last month when he saw something he thought was a deer moving in a field, and it turned out to be Jasmine.
She had escaped from the men who kidnapped her 29 days earlier and swam across a lake on Melchert’s property to get to his house and that’s when he saw her and helped her. Police gave him the $7,000 reward being offered to anyone with information on where the missing teen was, but when Melchert got the check, he turned and handed it to Jasmine, along with a big hug.
“The family needs the money,” he says. “To me, yeah, that’s a lot of money, but they need it way worse than I do.”
