Traditions change. Historically, the mourning dove season is Georgia was the kick off of the fall hunting season. The hunt didn't start until 12 noon so hunters could enjoy food and camaraderie before hitting the fields. Last year, Georgia's DNR, Department of Natural Resources, put out a survey and the numbers came back strongly for starting the season a half hour before sunrise.

And the results were:

‱ Start legal shooting hours on opening day at 12:00 noon: 30.5%

‱Start legal shooting hours on opening day 1/2 hour before sunrise: 48.2%

‱ No preference: 21.4%

Based on that, the hunting season for doves will begin Saturday, September 4th.
