The Down Syndrome Association Of Atlanta Buddy Walk on Saturday, December 2 at the Georgia International Plaza at the GWCC.
The Buddy Walk® was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. The Buddy Walk has grown from 17 walks in 1995 to over 250 walks globally and 330,000 participants in 2016. Last year, more than $14.2 million was raised nationwide to benefit local programs and services, as well as the national advocacy and public awareness initiatives of NDSS that benefit all individuals with Down syndrome.
Funds raised from the walk for DSAA in 2016 were used to provide immediate information and assistance to new parents and to families through educational seminars, social events, monthly networking groups for moms and dads, scholarships for camps and conferences and education materials and resources to the community. Additionally, monies raised at Buddy Walk significantly fund the Adult Down Syndrome Clinic and the Emory Down Syndrome Clinic, as well as provide financial support to GiGi’s Playhouse, Habima Theatre, Corrigan Care and other related charities.
The Buddy Walk® is a walk in which anyone can participate without special training. It is a day filled with family fun activities along with educators, therapists and vendors from our community willing to provide resources and share information as needed. Whether you have Down syndrome, adore someone who does or just want to show your support, come and join the 2017 Atlanta Buddy Walk®!
