Scotty McCreery is set to become the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry after megastar singer-songwriter Garth Brooks pulled off an unforgettable surprise on the legendary stage.

During McCreery’s spotlight artist performance at the Opry Country Christmas show on Sunday evening (December 3), Brooks, unbeknownst to McCreery, emerged on stage and handed the “Cab In A Solo” hitmaker a wrapped gift with a large red bow. Brooks clarified, however, that rather than it being a gift to McCreery, it’s “a Christmas present to the Grand Ole Opry. …We would love for Scotty McCreery to be the newest member of the (Grand Ole Opry),” Brooks said as the audience cheered.

“Holy cow,” McCreery exclaimed. “Yes, I would love to, first and foremost. I grew up listening to your records, man, and you’re what got me wanting to do this for a living, and I didn’t think that dream would ever become a reality. It is because of all of y’all sitting in this house tonight, so thank you very much,” he shared with the audience.

“When I got started doing this young, people said, ‘what’s your goals?’ And I said, ‘one day I’d like to be a member of the Grand Ole Opry,’” McCreery, who won American Idol as a teen and is now 30, said in a heartfelt moment on stage.

McCreery knelt down to touch the legendary circle on the stage where some of the genre’s most iconic artists have stood over the years. McCreery will join Brooks, in addition to Trisha Yearwood, Alan Jackson, Reba McEntire, Jon Pardi, Dolly Parton, Randy Travis, Carrie Underwood and many other legends and McCreery’s peers/ McCreery’s induction date will be announced at a later time, per the Grand Ole Opry.
