The "Fearless Girl" standing in front of the Wall Street Bull has been a pretty bold statement for women in the workplace for a while now. Or at least that's what many see it as. One artist doesn't see it that way.
Artist Alex Gardega installed "Sketchy Dog" (a peeing pug), next to the "Fearless Girl" statue's leg. He told NBC, "I'm a pretty happy person, not seething or angry and certainly not anti-feminist." He sees it more as an interference by a major corporation on someone else's art and vision, so he added his touch. He reminded people that the "Fearless Girl" was placed there by a major bank to promote a mutual fund. "It is advertising/promotion in the guise of art."
"My piece is not without a sense of humor but I do feel for Arturo and the integrity of his art," Gardega said. "There is plenty of room for 'Fearless Girl.' It just interferes with another artist's work/vision." (NBC)
Thoughts?
I see this causing a lot of drama, as more people see it and don't necessarily understand the context, but I kinda laughed when I saw it too. It's not that I have anything against women being equal to men in the workplace, it's just funny to see a peeing dog statue.
