I mean..... what could go wrong here?! #2020 just keeps getting weirder.
Jaydee Hanson, policy director for the International Center for Technology Assessment and Center for Food Safety bashed this idea of releasing 750 Million mosquitoes into the skies of Florida, calling it "a Jurassic Park experiment". An couldn't believe the State Of Florida wasted to much on this, during a public health crisis.
Scientist have created a genetically modified mosquito they call OX5034. The idea is that female mosquitoes are the only ones who can transmit diseases, as they are the ones who drink your blood and bite humans. They created this new mosquito to only produce female offspring, that die in the larval stage. This potentially wipes out a large population of dangerous, disease ridden mosquitoes.
In theory, this sounds like a positive thing. However, no trial or tests on potential harmful effects have been thoroughly examined. So, we're just hopin and praying it works I guess.
There have been many objections of many local residents in the Florida Keys and a coalition of environmental advocacy groups. Florida officials have decided to approve the release anyway.
Cross your fingers I guess! Sounds like a horrible idea to me..... ESPECIALLY after what this year has shown us so far!
