A student at Discovery High School in Gwinnett was caught on camera assaulting a teacher, and the school is not holding back on action.
Criminal charges have been filed against a student after they attacked a teacher at a Gwinnett County school. On Tuesday, a video went viral of the attack at Discovery High School in Lawrenceville when a student assaulted a teacher during class transition. A fellow student was recording the entire fight when it happened from a cell phone. l
A letter was sent to parents after the incident where principal Marci Sledge said "physical violence" would not be tolerated. (11 Alive)
"Using physical violence to attack students and/or staff will not be tolerated at our school. It is not only against our school disciplinary policy, it is against the law," Sledge wrote in the letter. "I want to be clear, the student who attacked the teacher will face criminal charges in addition to school disciplinary consequences."
Other students in the classroom jumped in to help the teacher and break up the fight. Principle Sledge praised them for being good Samaritans and not allowing it to be worse.
Other students could face consequences as well. "We are also looking at issuing school disciplinary consequences to students who helped plan and/or record the attack and attempted to upload it online," the principal said because these action violate school policies as well.
The school has dealt with an increase in fights and weapons in recent months. 11 Alive reported that fights on campuses are up 35 percent. From August through October of 2021, 473 fights were reported by Gwinnett Officials. But during the same period this year, over 638 fights were reported.
