It was two years ago when Liz Smith, a director at a children's hospital in Massachusetts, saw a beautiful little baby girl. The infant was in the care of the state and hadn't had a visitor in the five months since she was born. Smith continued to monitor the child and status of visitors. No one ever came. The baby's birth mother was a drug addict and was removed immediately after birth. Smith realized that the infant was born premature and weighed only two pounds at birth, a result of her birth mother using heroin, cocaine and methadone during pregnancy.
After several failed opportunities for foster, Smith decided the baby would come home with her. Now, several years later, they made it official! Liz and Gisele are mother and daughter, and share a last name.
