Man Mistakes 7ft Gator for a Dog and Gets Bitten

A 49yo Florida just outside Sarasota was attacked by a 7ft alligator last weekend. How do you ask? Well, according to Sarasota County Sheriffs, he was smoking a cigarette out in front of the motel that he was staying at and mistook the 7ft alligator for a dog on a long leash. He approached the alligator to pet it, and that is when the alligator attacked his legs, taking a sizable chunk of flesh and muscle out of his calf. He was taken to the hospital for the injuries and it appears that he will be ok.

The question is ask is... HOW?!?!?! How do you mistake a 7ft gator for a dog? Also, if you did in fact think it was a 7ft dog, why would you just go try to pet it without doing a little more investigation? The gator was trapped by fish and wildlife officers and set loose in a better habitat with no people who can't tell the difference between a 7ft gator and a dog. Some people are just meant to make us all feel better by doing something stupid.
